10/21 Wine Rack Soundtrack w/ JaRon Marshall

keyboardist of Black Pumas and hip hop producer

A truly fortuitous collaboration. I was so fortunate to work with an artist who was not only creating sounds for a band that I have so much love for, but who is an absolute luminary in the community I was just becoming part of.
My show with JaRon launched Wine Rack Soundtrack into the evolution phase.

The marriage of hip hop & jazz

JaRon’s music is perfect for Wine Rack Soundtrack - it’s loungey, it’s colorful, it’s lyrically challenging. I love and have a deep understanding of hip hop and rap, but I’ve never had a chance to present it with wine because there have historically been so few overlap audiences. This was a sweet spot though - being able to collaborate with an artist who creates hip hop music from the jazz composition and performance perspective with a notoriety from a rising soul pop-rock band — it’s a magic formula.

Even though it was a pinnacle moment to produce this show, the pre-production stages were tough. I was working with an artist in one of the fastest-growing, biggest bands in the world. While JaRon toured the US with the Pumas, we struggled to find space to connect. We would tuck into quick calls when he was home in between flights back from tour and performances at ACL Festival with the band and local clubs where he’d DJ. Juuust enough to grab at straws to define our program. As he arrived home for a few days prior to the show, we nailed it all down, I got to pairing, and the rest is history.

Presenting at the Pershing, a membership-based social club with a swanky venue space attached, this show was 100% VIBE. We set the stage by inviting a local CBD / D8 retailer to join in the presentation, Green Cross CBD, who provided extracts for Pershing to add to cocktails and a table set up where they sold pre-rolls (ok, gave a bunch to us) and other supportive products. That set the mood. We explored unreleased tunes and favorites from JaRon’s latest EP, The Black Power tape, a few of which featured vocals by the incomparable James Robinson, who blew everyone’s minds on the set. The tunes were as follows:

”Instant Satisfaction” - Bisol Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore
”Nubian Nights” - Bisol Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore
”Myself” - Louis Moreau Chablis Premier Cru
”Eyes” - Louis Moreau Chablis Premier Cru
”Last June” - ft. James Robinson - Brewer Clifton Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir
“FRWHTITSWORTH” - ft. James Robinson - Brewer Clifton Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir
”Black Cat” - ft. James Robinson - Sardon Tempranillo
”The Heist & Getaway” - [Adrien Quesada] - Sardon Tempranillo
